History

This page has information, links, and articles about the history of Wilmore and South End.  Links are immediately below, articles I've written in the past for Uptown Magazine are further down -- most interesting thing I discovered?  Parts of Wilmore sit over what was once one of the largest gold mining operations in the country pre-dating the San Francisco gold rush!

WILMORE HAS APPLIED FOR HISTORIC DESIGNATION - CHECK THE LINK FOR MORE INFO:  http://www.wilmorehistoricdistrict.com/index.html UPDATE: On Monday, May 17th 2010, city council voted and made Wilmore Charlotte's 6th Historic District!

Article in the Charlotte Observer: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/05/19/1443986/city-gains-a-new-local-historic.html

WILMORE BEGAN ITS' HISTORY as two farms:  The Wilson and Moore Farms - combined into "Wilmore" and subdivided in the early 1900's.  Modest bungalows and small duplex properties were built just outside uptown Charlotte as one of the early street-car subdivisions that were being built all over Charlotte at the time.  MIdwood, Elizabeth, Wesley Heights, and sister Dilworth were all developed as electric street-cars gave people access to new areas formerly too far from work and business hubs.  Dilworth and Wilmore were separated by South Boulevard and its' industrial and business uses - Dilworth with many more larger homes and generally a higher income demographic and Wilmore more blue-collar.  Now designated as one of Charlotte's 6 historic districts Wilmore has come full swing through the cycle of popularity, decline, and resurgence.  Wilmore is now a fantastically diverse and centrally located urban neighborhood - connected to South End and Uptown Charlotte.  Below you'll find an articles from Uptown Magazine about the neighborhood and about its' history as a gold mining locale in the early and mid 1800's.

  • Uptown Magazine - July 2007 - Article about Charlotte's 1800's Gold Rush (in uptown & Wilmore) Few know that the district once was home to large gold mining operations and many of Wilmore's streets and homes are built over old mine shafts - particularly around Mint Street, Summit Avenue, and all the way up to Bank of America Stadium.
