Living in Historic Wilmore & South End

I'm a native of Charlotte and have watched my hometown dramatically change around me over the years.  From a small southern town with little life uptown outside the business-day crowd and scattered and disjoined suburbs to a vibrant New South City with urban life and metropolitan feel feel that just didn't exist only a few short years ago. This definitely isn't the city I grew up in though much of the same low-key southern vibe is still quite alive.  I welcome the energy and changes that are here now - I didn't have to move to a big city like so many of my friends did - it came to me.

I grew up all over the city - Central Avenue, Eastway Drive, Southpark, Dilworth, Myers Park, Freedom Park, Mint Hill, Matthews, and the center of Uptown and now currently Historic South End / Wilmore - moving generally outward like so many others during the last few decades.  Like many of those, as well, I've moved back in to enjoy urban living with almost everything I need a short walk away and entertainment options within an easy walk or light rail train ride.  This option was very limited when I was growing up and many of the neighborhoods close-in to town with the density and proximity necessary for this type of living were generally run down with poor housing options and higher than average crime rates.

Wilmore, during those years, wasn't a place I'd ever heard of and certainly a place I wouldn't have considered living.  Now I couldn't be happier to live in such a diverse, energetic, and neighborly spot.  Having lived all over the city over the years I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.  Add in the Historic Designation Wilmore just received as Charlotte's 6th Historic district and everything seems to be perfect!

I live in Wilmore with my partner Joey Hewell, owner of J Studio Salon and stylist and fill-in anchor and color commentator for Fox News Charlotte. With us we have our three dogs Bamboo, Wicky, and Tiki.  Bamboo is a Catahoula Leopard Dog and Tiki and Wicky are rescue Pit Bulls.  We have updated and live in two bungalows on South Tryon Street (as much the cusp and border of Wilmore and Southend as you can get) on a half acre site with plenty of room for our extensive summer gardens and a house to live in and a house for my office and Joey's salon.  Check out the site page "Before and After" for photos of the transformation of these diamonds in the rough.
